I've been tweaking my forum all year now and I think it's 'getting there'. I like the darker colours - it is easier on your eyes when you're spending a large amount of time reading. They also suit the 'mysterious' subject matter.

Work in progress, but after 6 years working with MINI2 and modifying it too much for my own good (http://www.mini2.com/forum/), I've just started on a new Fiat 500 forum at http://nf500.com/forums/ with integration to the main Wordpress site (http://nf500.com). No template mods other than header and footer, the rest is CSS only. With 3.7 looming large I didn't fancy messing about with updates that soon!

I find it a challenge to balance a 'clean' (hopefully crisp) look with legibility, especially on showthread. I'm quite pleased with the way it's turned out so far.
