    I had that problem to DarknessDevine,
    so I used the category split by floris found here: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110590

    an did the category image additions from this:

    Now at the very top of the template add

    <!-- top -->
    <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="$stylevar[outertablewidth]" align="center">
    <tr>
    <td style="text-align: $stylevar[left]" class="tcat"><img src="" alt="" /></td>
    <td width="100%" class="tcat" style="background-image: url(); text-align: center;"><a style="float:$stylevar[right]" href="#top" onclick="return toggle_collapse('forumbit_$forumid')"><img id="collapseimg_forumbit_$forumid" src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/collapse_tcat{$collapseimg_forumid}.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a>
    <a href="forumdisplay.php?$session[sessionurl]f=$forum[forumid]">$forum[title]</a></td>
    <td style="text-align: $stylevar[right]" class="tcat"><img src="" alt="" /></td>
    </tr>
    </table>
    <!-- /top -->

    and this at the bottom (only if you want images on the bottom too

    <!-- bottom -->
    <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="$stylevar[outertablewidth]" align="center">
    <tr>
    <td style="text-align: $stylevar[left]" class="tcat"><img src="" alt="" /></td>
    <td width="100%" class="tcat" style="background-image: url(); text-align: center;"></td>
    <td style="text-align: $stylevar[right]" class="tcat"><img src="" alt="" /></td>
    </tr>
    </table>
    <!-- /bottom -->

    At the very bottom, regardless if you added the bottom image part add

    <div style="padding: 5px 5px 5px p5x;"></div>

    and hit save.

    Now im not giving you any images or bg stuff, so make sure you fill in the correct images

    Youll need to replace your own path to an image that will serve its purpuse

    Now for the adding images to the classes

    AdminCP > Styles & Templates > Style Manager > Clickk on go for the style your working on

    Scroll down to the Category Strips Settings area

    Your need to change the default vB setting too

    #HEX url(images/gradients/gradient_tcat.gif) repeat-x top left

    You can either overwrite the default vB one, or make your own with its own name and just change the location where it is.

    when its done it should look like

    #c0c0c0 url(images/gradients/gradient_tcat.gif) repeat-x top left

    or

    #c0c0c0 url(images/misc/tcat.gif) repeat-x top left

    Somthing along thos lines
    i don't remember where I picked that up from...sorry

    good luck!
